Because Helen bore Menelaus no sons, he had Megapenthes by a slave woman (named Pieris or Tereis). Even so, Menelaus loved him dearly and arranged a rich marriage for him.2

When Menelaus died, Megapenthes and his brother Nicostratus seized power in Sparta. Denying Helen any right to the kingdom, they drove her into exile in Rhodes, though they were later passed over for the high kingship in favor of Orestes.3
