King of Argos after Iasus in Pausanias' native succession, son of Agenor and father of Sthenelas; his daughter Psamathe bore Apollo a son whose death brought vengeance on the city.1
After Iasus, Crotopus son of Agenor came to the throne at Argos and begat Sthenelas — until Danaus sailed from Egypt against Gelanor son of Sthenelas and interrupted the succession of Agenor's house.2
In the reign of Crotopus at Argos, Psamathe his daughter bore a son to Apollo; fearing her father she exposed the child, and when Crotopus' sheepdogs destroyed the infant Apollo sent Vengeance against the Argives — the story Pausanias tells beside the grave of Coroebus at Megara and again at Argos, where Linus son of Psamathe has a tomb.3
Pausanias saw Crotopus' tomb at Argos near a precinct of Cretan Dionysus, in the quarter where Perilaus the tyrant later pulled down the prison Acrisius had built for Danae.4
