Acrisius fought a bitter war against his twin brother Proetus for the throne of Argos. When an oracle warned him that a son born to his daughter Danae would kill him, he locked her away in a subterranean bronze chamber.2
Despite his precautions, Danae gave birth to Perseus. Acrisius threw both mother and child into the sea in a wooden chest. Years later, his fears came true: while attending athletic games in Larissa, Perseus accidentally struck Acrisius with a discus, fulfilling the prophecy.3
