Daughter of Crotopus king of Argos; she bore Apollo a son and, in terror of her father, exposed the infant — whose death by Crotopus' sheepdogs brought Vengeance and plague upon the Argives.1
In the reign of Crotopus at Argos, Psamathe his daughter bore a son to Apollo. Being in dire terror of her father, she exposed the child; he was found and destroyed by the sheepdogs of Crotopus.2
Apollo sent Vengeance against the city to punish the Argives. They say she used to snatch children from their mothers until Coroebus, to please the Argives, slew Vengeance — whereat plague fell upon the city as a second punishment, until the Pythia ordered Coroebus to carry a tripod from the sanctuary and dwell where it fell from his hands.3
Pausanias saw at Argos the grave of Linus, son of Apollo by Psamathe the daughter of Crotopus — the same story he had already told beside the grave of Coroebus at Megara.4
