Apollonius makes Tiphys the first pilot, son of Phorbas, whom Athena herself set at the steering-oar when the ship was launched. He died in the house of King Lycus among the Mariandyni; Hera then kindled Ancaeus of Samos to guide the Argo through the Clashing Rocks.2
