The river-god of the plain before Ilion, whose waters the Trojans and Achaeans crossed in battle; father of Teucer the first king of the Troad and, by Callirrhoe, ancestor of the royal house through Tros and Ilus.1
Apollodorus makes Scamander the river father of Teucer, who ruled the land before Dardanus came; by the nymph Idaea he begot the king who gave the country the name of the Teucrians.2
Tros married Callirrhoe, daughter of Scamander, and begat Ilus, Assaracus, and Ganymede; Ilus in turn took a wife from the same stream when Apollodorus makes him son of Tros and Callirrhoe, daughter of Scamander.3
In the Iliad the river rises against Achilles for the corpses choking his channels. Scamander — whom the gods call Xanthus — calls Simoeis to his aid, and only the fire of Hephaestus and the word of Hera stay the flood that would have drowned the hero.4
