Before Dardanus came from Samothrace, the country on the opposite mainland was called Teucria after Teucer, son of Scamander and Idaea. He welcomed the exiled son of Zeus with a share of the land and his daughter Batia.2

When Teucer died without a son of his own to succeed, Dardanus, whom he had made son-in-law and ally, called the whole country Dardania after himself — though the people long remained Teucrians in name.3
