THE STORY
During the war of the Seven Against Thebes, the city was on the brink of ruin. The blind prophet Tiresias revealed that the Thebans would only be victorious if a descendant of the original dragon's teeth (the Spartoi) offered himself freely to Ares. 1
Realizing he alone fit the oracle's demand, the young Menoeceus threw himself from the high walls of the city. His selfless sacrifice appeased the war god, and Thebes was saved from destruction. A pomegranate tree was said to grow from his tomb. 2
