In Greek mythology, Elara (also Elare or Alera; Ancient Greek Ἐλάρα) was a mortal princess, daughter of King Orchomenus (or of Minyas in some accounts), whom Zeus loved and hid deep beneath the earth for fear of Hera. There she bore the giant Tityos; tradition adds that she died in labour because of the child's enormous size. The Euboean cave through which Tityos was said to reach the surface was called Elarion.

I.Mother of Tityos
Zeus fell in love with Elara and, to conceal her from Hera, placed her deep under the earth. In that chthonic confinement she gave birth to Tityos, a giant later also called earth-born (γηγενής) and sometimes son of Gaia for that reason. Apollodorus (1.4.2), scholia on the Odyssey, and Pherecydes (via the Argonautica scholia) preserve the story; Strabo locates the emergence cave on Euboea under the name Elarion.
Some accounts name her Larissa; others make her daughter of Minyas rather than of Orchomenus — a Boeotian genealogical fork that does not change her role as Tityos' mother.
II.Later namesake
A moon of Jupiter discovered in 1905 received the name Elara after this mythological figure. The atlas entry (elara-orchomenus) is the Orchomenian mother of Tityos, not the satellite.
