Son of Sthenelus son of Capaneus; last sole king of Argos before Orestes seized the city — Pausanias says he died without offspring, ending the line that had reunited the three kingdoms.1
When Amphilochus migrated after Troy and Cyanippus died childless, Sthenelus son of Capaneus had already inherited Iphis' third of the kingdom. His son Cylarabes then held Argos united — but he too left no heirs, and the neighbouring Orestes son of Agamemnon took the city.2
Pausanias still knew his name on the ground at Argos: the Cylarabis, the race-course in the city, and a gymnasium of Cylarabes where an Athena called Pania was worshipped, with graves shown of Sthenelus and of Cylarabes himself.3
