A son of Melampus at Argos, Antiphates fathered Oicles, who in turn begot the seer Amphiaraus — the link between the Melampodid healers and the prophetic house destroyed at Thebes.1
Homer carries the Argive seer-line through him. After Melampus won his share of Argos, wedded a wife, and built a house, he begot Antiphates and Mantius; Antiphates begot great-hearted Oicles, and Oicles begot Amphiaraus, while Mantius begot Polypheides, whom Apollo made prophet after Amphiaraus was dead.2
Apollodorus places the same generation in the wider Melampodid catalogue: Melampus the seer, brother of Bias, understood the speech of birds after serpents purged his ears, cured the maddened women of Argos, and from his throne at Argos fathered the line that would produce both Amphiaraus and, through Mantius, Theoclymenus' grandfather Polypheides.3
