Son of Mantius in the Melampodid line at Argos — Apollo made him a seer, far the best of mortals after Amphiaraus was dead; wroth with his father, he removed to Hyperesia and there begot Theoclymenus.1
Homer traces the house from Melampus of Pylos through Antiphates and Mantius. Mantius begot Polypheides and Cleitus; golden-throned Dawn snatched Cleitus away for his beauty, but Apollo made Polypheides high of heart a prophet surpassing all mortals once Amphiaraus lay dead in Thebes.2
Polypheides waxed wroth with his father and removed to Hyperesia, where he dwelt and prophesied to all men. His son Theoclymenus, of the same far-off seer-line, would later find Telemachus pouring libations by his ship at Pylos and sail with him to rocky Ithaca.3
