When Melampus cured the maddened women in the reign of Anaxagoras, son of Argeus, son of Megapenthes, Argos was split into three equal kingdoms. Anaxagoras kept the native third; Melampus and Bias received the other shares. Pausanias says the house of Anaxagoras ruled longer than the other two, and names Alector as his son in the succession that would pass through Iphis to Sthenelus son of Capaneus.2
