Corinthian founder — not a padded king-list. Delphi sent him to Ortygia opposite Trinacria, where the oracle said Alpheius' mouth mingles with the springs of broad Arethusa; Pausanias treats that marvel as the sign that bound Elis to the Sicilian colony. Arethusa and Alpheus belong to the city sky as residences, not as reigns.1
