Apollodorus tells how Atalanta, reared by hunters after a she-bear suckled the exposed infant, kept herself a virgin and hunted always under arms. The centaurs Rhoecus and Hylaeus tried to force her, but she shot them both down and killed them.2

He must be kept distinct from Rhoecus the Samian bronze-founder whom Pausanias praises — a mortal craftsman of Patara and Ephesus, not a centaur of the Arcadian mountains.3
