Hesiod lists Proto among the daughters of Nereus and Doris — after Agaue and Doto, beside Pherusa and Dynamene in the Theogony roll of sea-goddesses sprung from the Old Man of the Sea.2

Homer names Proto in the bright cave when Thetis mourns: Doto and Proto and Pherousa and Dynamene beat their breasts together at the silver-footed goddess' lead. She must not be confused with Protogeneia or other mortal Proto-forms; this node is strictly the Nereid of the catalogue rolls.3
