Apollodorus tells how the gods set the Harpies over Phineus: whenever food was laid they snatched and befouled it. The winged Boreads pursued them; Iris swore by Styx they would trouble him no more. In return Phineus foretold the voyage and bade them release a dove through the Symplegades.2
