In Pausanias' Theban king-list, Opheltes is the son of Peneleos and the father of Damasichthon — the link through which the Boeotian captain's line returned to the Cadmeia after Autesion migrated to the Dorians.1

Pausanias names him only in passing, as the middle generation between the Trojan captain Peneleos and the king Damasichthon who succeeded Autesion. When the Erinyes drove Autesion from Thebes, the Thebans chose Damasichthon son of Opheltes son of Peneleos — a return to Boeotian stock after the Epigon and Labdacid branches had each in turn held and lost the throne.2
