Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart's Latin school opera casts Oebalus as Hyacinthus' father at the Spartan court — the king who mourns when Apollo's discus kills his son. The libretto keeps the Oebalid genealogy that made Hyacinthus an Oebalides in Roman poetry.

Oebalus

King of Sparta, father of Tyndareus, Icarius, and Hippocoon — the stem from which Helen, the Dioscuri, and Penelope descend as Oebalids.

Tyndareus

Oebalus' son who holds the Spartan throne and fosters Helen and the Dioscuri — the Oebalid house at the hinge of the Trojan War.

Oebalides

Roman poets call Spartans and Helen's line Oebalides after Oebalus — the king's name as shorthand for Lacedaemon.

Hyacinthus

Often styled an Oebalid — Apollo's Spartan beloved claimed as Oebalus' son in some genealogies and on Mozart's stage.
