Melas (Ancient Greek Μέλας, "black, dark") was a son of Phrixus and Chalciope at Aea in Colchis. With his brothers he sailed toward Orchomenus, met the Argonauts, returned to Aeetes' court, and fled when Medea stole the Golden Fleece. By Eurycleia he is sometimes father of Hyperes.

I.Son of Phrixus
Apollodorus and Apollonius name Melas among Phrixus' four sons by Chalciope (Aeetes' daughter). Shipwrecked or intercepted on the voyage to reclaim Athamas' inheritance, they join Jason's company and re-enter Colchis as mediators — then escape with the Argonauts when Medea's theft makes the court deadly.
A scholion on Pindar gives him Eurycleia (daughter of Athamas and Themisto) as wife and Hyperes as son.
II.Homonym care
Other Melantes include the Calydonian son of Porthaon whose sons Tydeus slew, a son of Licymnius who fell with Heracles, and several local eponyms. The atlas id melas-colchis is Phrixus' Colchian son alone.
