At Delphi, among white-marble figures of Persians on the pillars, Pausanias saw a statue of Artemisia daughter of Lygdamis and queen of Halicarnassus — a lady who voluntarily joined Xerxes' expedition and distinguished herself at the naval battle off Salamis. The father is named only as king of her Carian city.2
