Hesiod lists Galene early among the daughters of Nereus and rich-haired Doris — after Eudora and Thetis, before Glauce and Cymothoe — one of the passing lovely goddesses sprung from the Old Man of the Sea.2

Her name encodes the stillness of the deep, yet Hesiod assigns her no tale beyond the list-position. She must not be merged with Galatea the comely Nereid of Acis, nor with any later personification of calm outside the seven lenses of this atlas.3
