Waterhouse pairs the fading nymph with the boy at the spring — Echo's last embrace refused, her body already dissolving into the repeating voice Ovid describes. Juno's punishment and Narcissus' scorn fixed her among the most famous unrequited loves of the Metamorphoses shelf.

Poussin's Louvre pastoral shows Narcissus already fading by the water while Echo collapses in grief and a putto mourns nearby — Ovid's double metamorphosis rendered as ordered landscape tragedy. Turner's early mythological landscape dissolves Echo and Narcissus into luminous atmosphere — figures nearly lost in the golden haze of a classical Arcadia.
