Echo is a mountain nymph in Greek mythology who, punished by Juno, could only repeat the last words of others. She loved Narcissus and wasted away until only her voice remained.

I.Mythology

Ovid tells how Juno stripped Echo of free speech because the nymph delayed her while Jove's mistresses escaped (Metamorphoses 3.347–370).

Echo loved Narcissus, answered his call, was scorned, and faded to repeating voice alone (3.371–510).
