The Demeter of Knidos

A marble statue of the seated goddess, carved around 350 BC and discovered at the sanctuary of Demeter at Knidos in Asia Minor. Her gentle, sorrowful expression is often read as the grief of a mother mourning her abducted daughter Persephone. The statue is now in the British Museum.
The Return of Persephone

An oil painting by the Victorian classicist Frederic Leighton showing Hermes guiding Persephone up from the darkness of the underworld into the outstretched arms of her mother. The annual reunion of Demeter and Persephone, the myth behind the return of spring, becomes a luminous moment of release. The painting is held by Leeds Art Gallery.
Demeter Mourning for Persephone

In this late Pre-Raphaelite canvas, Evelyn de Morgan isolates the goddess in the winter of her grief: Demeter sits wrapped in a dark mantle among withered stalks, her face turned inward while the earth goes barren for her stolen daughter. Painted in 1906, the picture treats the Homeric Hymn's maternal agony as a modern allegory of loss and seasonal death, making Demeter — not Persephone — the emotional centre of the abduction myth.
The Goddess Ceres and the Symbols of Fertility

The Flemish Baroque painter Abraham Janssens presents Ceres — the Roman Demeter — as a full-bodied allegory of agricultural abundance, crowned with grain and surrounded by the fruits, sheaves and implements of the harvest. Painted in Antwerp in the early seventeenth century, the canvas belongs to the northern tradition that translated the Greek grain-goddess into a sumptuous emblem of fertility for private collectors, keeping Demeter's domain vivid under her Latin name.
Head of Demeter from the Lycosoura cult group
Damophon of Messene, c. 190–180 BC
The colossal marble head of Demeter from the cult group Damophon carved for the Temple of Despoina at Lycosoura in Arcadia, now in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (inv. 1734). Alongside Despoina, Artemis and the Titan Anytus, the goddess sat as mother of the mysteries in one of the great Peloponnesian sanctuaries; the surviving head — veiled, grave, and monumental — is among the finest Hellenistic images of Demeter as a mystery cult divinity rather than a harvest allegory alone.
