Pausanias rejects Pindar's claim that Amazons founded the Ephesian temple during their campaign against Athens; the sanctuary was founded, he says, by Coresus an aboriginal and Ephesus, from whom the city took its name. Amazon women from the Thermodon knew the shrine from of old and sacrificed there, but they did not establish it.2
