Titan son of Uranus and Gaia, consort of his sister Phoebe and father of Leto and Asteria, through whom his line reaches Apollo, Artemis and Hecate.1
Gaia bore Coeus to starry Uranus among the eldest divine generation, after deep-swirling Oceanus and before Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus and Cronus. Pseudo-Apollodorus likewise names him among the male Titans born from Earth and Sky.2
His surviving genealogy is carried by Phoebe. Hesiod says she came to the desired embrace of Coeus and bore dark-gowned Leto, gentlest in all Olympus, and Asteria of happy name. Pseudo-Apollodorus preserves the same pair of daughters: Leto became the mother of Apollo and Artemis by Zeus, while Asteria became the mother of Hecate by Perses.3
