Eurotas River and Taygetus (landscape)
Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld, 1788
Landscape painters of Laconia fixed the Eurotas and Taygetus as the visible body of the myth Apollodorus tells in prose: Cleocharia the Naiad bore Eurotas to the earth-born Lelex, and the river that drained the Spartan plain still carries the son's name through the land his daughter Sparta wedded to Lacedaemon.
