Diana and Callisto
Titian, 1556–1559
Painted for Philip II of Spain as one of Titian's celebrated mythological 'poesie', this oil on canvas seizes the moment of exposure: the huntress-goddess Diana, enthroned among her nymphs at a woodland spring, points in cold judgement as Callisto's companions strip away her garment to reveal the swelling pregnancy that betrays her broken vow of chastity. The shrinking, half-collapsed Callisto, her shame and dread written across her body, embodies Ovid's account in the Metamorphoses of the nymph cast out of Diana's band after Jupiter, disguised as the goddess herself, forced himself upon her. Jointly owned by the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery, London, it is one of the supreme achievements of Venetian Renaissance painting.
Jupiter in the Guise of Diana, and the Nymph Callisto

Boucher renders the deception at the heart of the myth with Rococo sensuality: Jupiter, having taken the form of the chaste goddess Diana to win the trust of her sworn-virgin follower, embraces the unsuspecting Callisto in a bower of tumbled drapery and putti, the god's true nature hinted at only by the eagle and thunderbolt hovering above. Following Ovid's telling that Zeus assumed Artemis's likeness to approach the maiden, the painting turns a tale of violation into a confection of pearly flesh and silken color. Now in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, it exemplifies the mythological erotica favored at the court of Louis XV.
Diana and Callisto

In this large, dynamically composed canvas Rubens stages the discovery of Callisto's pregnancy in a lush wooded landscape. Diana, identifiable by the crescent moon at her brow, presides over a cluster of voluptuous bathing nymphs who turn upon the disgraced Callisto, drawing aside the cloth that conceals her condition. Rubens dwells on the rhythm of intertwined bodies and the drama of accusation and shame drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where Callisto, undone by Jupiter's assault, is expelled from the goddess's chaste company. The painting is held in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
Apulian Red-Figure Chous with Kallisto Turning into a Bear

This South Italian (Apulian) terracotta wine-jug preserves one of the few ancient depictions of the myth's grimmest turn: Callisto's metamorphosis into a bear. The painted figure is shown mid-transformation, animal features overtaking her human form as the gods who set her fate look on, an image of the catasterism tradition by which Callisto would ultimately be placed among the stars as the Great Bear. A rare visual witness to the Arcadian legend from the Greek world itself, the vessel is in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Villa, Pacific Palisades.
