Callisto daughter of Lycaon, sworn companion of Diana in the Arcadian hunt, was loved by Jove in the goddess' likeness and bore Arcas — then, whether by Juno's wrath or Zeus' concealment, became a bear; years later her son nearly speared her in the wood, and Jupiter set both among the stars as the Great and Little Bear.1
Companion of Diana
Callisto daughter of Lycaon wore Diana's garb and hunted in her train, swearing to remain a maid. Apollodorus records rival parentages — Hesiod made her a nymph, Asius a daughter of Nycteus, Pherecydes of Ceteus — but all agree she was beloved of Artemis until heaven intervened.2
Jove in disguise
Jove came to her in Diana's likeness — or, Apollodorus adds, in Apollo's — and overcame the unwilling nymph. When her time came she bore Arcas, who would give Arcadia its name. She hid the pregnancy as long as she could from the goddess whose company she had sworn to keep.3
The bear⚖
Ovid and Hyginus make Juno seize Callisto by the hair and change her into a bear when the birth of Arcas proves the intrigue. Apollodorus instead has Zeus himself transform her to hide the affair from Hera, who then persuades Artemis to shoot the beast — while others say Diana killed her for breaking her vow of maidenhood.4
Arcas and the stars
Jove snatched the infant Arcas to be reared in Arcadia while the mother wandered as a bear. Years later, hunting on Erymanthus, Arcas drew his spear against the beast that was Callisto — and Jove stayed the crime by lifting both into heaven as neighboring constellations. Pausanias knew her grave still shown in Arcadia, though Homer had long since named the Bear among the stars.5
Arcas divides the land
When Arcas grew to kingship he divided Arcadia among his sons. Pausanias records that he named Azania for Azan, that Cleitor son of Azan became the most powerful of the Arcadian kings and founded the city Cleitor on the northern plain, and that Lycosura on Mount Lycaeus — which Pausanias calls the oldest city on earth — was seat of Cleitor and cradle of the Lycaean cult of Zeus.6
