In Greek mythology, Amythaon was a prince of Iolcus, the son of King Cretheus and Tyro, daughter of King Salmoneus of Elis. He was the brother of Aeson and Pheres, and he settled at Pylos in Messenia. Through his wife he became the father of the seers and heroes Bias and Melampus, among other children.

I.Overview
In Greek mythology, Amythaon (Ancient Greek: Ἀμυθάων) was a prince of Iolcus as the son of King Cretheus and Tyro, the daughter of King Salmoneus of Elis. He was the brother of Aeson, the father of Jason, and of Pheres.
Amythaon left Iolcus and dwelt at Pylos in Messenia.
II.Family
Amythaon married Idomene, the daughter of his brother Pheres and thus his own niece; according to another account his wife is named Aglaia, while Idomene is sometimes instead said to be the daughter of Abas, king of Argos.
By this marriage he became the father of Bias and Melampus, as well as of Aeolia and Perimele. His son Melampus became a celebrated seer and healer, and Bias likewise founded a notable line at Argos.
III.Mythology
According to Pindar, Amythaon, together with several other members of his family, went to Iolcus to intercede with Pelias on behalf of Jason, supporting the hero's claim against the usurping king.
Pausanias mentioned Amythaon among those to whom the restoration of the Ancient Olympic Games was ascribed.
A part of Elis was thought to have been named Amythaonia after him.
