Apollodorus calls Aerope a daughter of Catreus and wife of Atreus. Loving Thyestes, she gave him the golden lamb that Atreus had hidden, allowing Thyestes to display the token and claim the Mycenaean throne.2

Hyginus likewise makes her adultery the injury behind the brothers' feud. His later catalogue confusingly associates her with the children served to Thyestes, a claim that must remain separate from Apollodorus' Naiad mother.3
