Diana and Actaeon
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio), 1556–1559
Painted for King Philip II of Spain as one of Titian's mythological 'poesie' drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses, this canvas captures the fatal instant the young Theban hunter Actaeon parts a crimson curtain and surprises the goddess Diana (the Roman Artemis) bathing with her nymphs at the spring of Gargaphie. The startled, half-clothed figures recoil in the cool blue grotto while Diana fixes the intruder with an icy stare that already pronounces his doom — soon she will splash him with water and transform him into a stag. A stag's skull mounted on a pillar foreshadows his fate. Now jointly owned by the National Gallery in London and the National Galleries of Scotland, it ranks among the supreme achievements of Venetian Renaissance painting.
The Death of Actaeon

Left unfinished in Titian's studio at his death and worked over many years, this brooding late masterpiece depicts the grim sequel to the bathing scene: Actaeon, already sprouting the antlers and animal head of a stag, collapses under the assault of his own hunting pack while Diana strides in from the left, bow drawn, presiding over the punishment. The wild, dissolving brushwork and stormy autumnal landscape register the artist's most experimental manner, dissolving figures into the very atmosphere of the forest. Acquired by the National Gallery, London, it is celebrated as one of the most powerful evocations of metamorphosis and divine retribution in Western art.
Apulian Red-figure Skyphos Depicting the Myth of Actaeon

This South Italian (Apulian) red-figure drinking cup, now in the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, preserves one of the ancient Greek world's enduring images of the Actaeon myth. Painted in the early-to-mid fourth century BC, the vase shows the hunter set upon by his hounds as the goddess Artemis enacts his destruction — an example of how the doomed Theban grandson of Cadmus was depicted in everyday painted pottery long before his Renaissance fame. Such vases attest the deep antiquity of the story told by Apollodorus, Ovid, and Hyginus.
The Transformation of Actaeon

An etching by the French Renaissance printmaker Jean Mignon, associated with the School of Fontainebleau, illustrating the central transformation episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Mignon shows the moment Diana sprinkles the hunter at her woodland spring as antlers begin to rise from his brow, the mannerist elongation of the bathing nymphs and rippling landscape typical of Fontainebleau style. Prints like this spread the Actaeon story through sixteenth-century Europe and fed directly into the imagery later monumentalized by painters such as Titian.
