In Roman legendary history, the Aborigines are the oldest inhabitants of central Italy, connected with Latinus, Evander, and Aeneas. Driven from the Sabine highlands near Reate, they settle Latium, absorb or displace the Sicels, and under King Latinus become the Latini — the native stock with whom Trojan Aeneas merges his line in Apollodorus' Epitome.

I.Native Italians of Latium
Dionysius of Halicarnassus and the Roman antiquarian tradition place the Aborigines first about Reate in Sabine country, then in Latium after pressure from the Sabines. They expel or absorb Sicels (whose emigration to Sicily supplies one aetiology of the island's name) and, under Latinus, become the Prisci Latini. Cato could treat them as Hellenic immigrants rather than autochthones; the folk etymology ab origine remains the dominant schoolbook reading.
Apollodorus (Epitome 6.20) abbreviates the Returns: Aeneas comes to Italy to the Aborigines and founds the line from which Rome claims descent. Pausanias uses aborigines as a Greek ethnographic word for autochthonous Peloponnesians; the Italian collective of the Aeneas legend is a separate people-node, not to be merged with that Greek usage.
II.Cities and scope
Dionysius lists Aboriginal towns about Reate (Lista as mother-city, Cutilia, Issa, and others) and Latian sites such as Antemnae, Caenina, and Tibur. The atlas node is the collective Italian people of the foundation legend, not a single polis ruler.
