The native Italian people among whom Apollodorus sets Aeneas' kingdom after Troy — the aboriginal stock with whom the Trojan survivor merged his line, seed of the Roman foundation legend in the Epitome's Returns.1
Apollodorus summarises the Latin tradition in the Nostoi: Aeneas, having escaped with Anchises and Ascanius after Troy was taken, came to Italy to the Aborigines and merged his line with the native kings — the seed from which Rome would claim descent.2
The name aborigines — 'from the beginning' — marks the pre-Trojan inhabitants of the Italian peninsula in the historiographic tradition Apollodorus abbreviates. Pausanias uses the same word for the Arcadians and Achaeans as autochthonous Peloponnesians; the Italian Aborigines of the Aeneas legend are a separate collective, not to be merged with the Greek ethnographic term.3
