Syrinx is a Hamadryad nymph of Arcadian Nonacris who fled Pan and was transformed into reeds, from which the god fashioned the pastoral pipes named syrinx.

I.Mythology

Ovid places Syrinx among the Hamadryads of Nonacris; pursued by Pan to the Ladon, she prays the river nymphs to change her and becomes reeds (Metamorphoses 1.868–954).

Pan cuts the reeds to unequal lengths and binds them with wax, inventing the instrument that bears her name.
