Ponos (also Ponus) is the personification of toil, hardship, and labour in Greek mythology. According to Hesiod's Theogony he was a son of Eris (Strife), with no father named, and so belonged to the brood of grim personified abstractions that Strife brought forth. Among the early Greek poets the figure carries the negative weight of suffering and distress, but in later antiquity, notably in a poem by the second-century AD author Lucian, Ponos is reinterpreted in a positive light, as the toil that leads toward a virtuous life.

I.Family
According to Hesiod's Theogony, Ponos was the son of Eris (Strife), with no father mentioned. Like all of the children of Eris named by Hesiod, Ponos is a personified abstraction rather than a figure with an independent narrative identity, and he stands among the harmful offspring that Strife generates.
A Latin counterpart appears in Cicero's De Natura Deorum, where Labor (the equivalent of Ponos) is listed instead as a child of Erebus (Darkness) and Nox (Night), offering a comparative classical view of the personification of toil.
II.Mythology and role
Ponos functions as an allegorical figure with little identity beyond his conceptual meaning, embodying the hard labour, exertion, and distress that follow from strife and discord. In Hesiod's account the connotation is wholly negative, the suffering that arises out of conflict.
Later interpretation shifted this emphasis. In a poem by Lucian, writing in the second century AD, Ponos is given a positive aspect, presented as the hardship and effort that lead a person toward a virtuous life rather than as mere misery.
III.Attestations
The earliest literary attestation of Ponos is in Hesiod's Theogony, among the children of Eris. The figure also appears in the works of Lucian, including the Timon, where the positive, virtue-leading reading of toil is developed.
The corresponding Latin personification, Labor, is attested in Cicero's De Natura Deorum as part of a genealogy of personified abstractions descended from Erebus and Night.
