THE STORY
Deprived of his promised turn to rule Thebes by his brother Eteocles, Polynices fled to Argos. There he married the daughter of King Adrastus, who pledged to restore his son-in-law to the Theban throne. 1
With a great Argive host led by seven champions, Polynices marched on his native city. The siege was brutal, and to settle the war without further slaughter of the armies, Polynices challenged his brother to single combat. 2
In the duel, the brothers inflicted mortal wounds upon one another, fulfilling their father's bitter curse. While Eteocles was given an honorable burial by the regent Creon, Polynices was decreed a traitor to be left unburied, an edict that his sister Antigone would fatally defy. 3
