Philyra was an Oceanid nymph, daughter of Oceanus, who became the mother of Chiron the centaur by Cronus. When Cronus, surprised in their union, transformed into a horse, Philyra bore a child of double form and, in shame, was later transformed into the linden tree.

I.Mythology
Apollodorus names Philyra among the great genealogies as mother of Chiron by Cronus. Apollonius tells how Cronus lay with her on the island named for her while Zeus was still hidden in Crete, and how she fled in shame after bearing the centaur.
Hyginus adds that Philyra prayed to be changed into another form and became the linden tree (philyra in Greek).
