An Amazon queen who came to Troy after Hector's death — daughter of Ares and Otrera in Hyginus' roll — and was slain by Achilles before the walls.1
Hyginus names Penthesilea among the Amazons and, in his catalogue of Trojan combats, makes her daughter of Mars and Otrera — the same Otrera who founded Artemis' temple at Ephesus and bore Hippolyte, whose belt Heracles took.2
After Hector fell, Penthesilea led her Amazons to Priam's aid. Achilles met her in battle and killed her — an episode outside the Iliad itself, preserved in the Epic Cycle and Apollodorus' Epitome. A later tradition in the same Epitome has Achilles slay Thersites when the reviler mocked his grief for the Amazon.3⚖
