After Orion came to Chios and wooed Merope, daughter of Oenopion, the king made him drunk, put out his eyes while he slept, and cast him on the seashore — whence the blinded hunter went to the forge of Hephaestus to regain the light.2

Pausanias records that Oenopion sailed from Crete to Chios with his sons Talus, Euanthes, Melas, Salagus, and Athamas — a colonist-king in the Ionian isle's genealogies.3
