Apollodorus says Hippodamia persuaded Myrtilus, who loved her, to omit the linchpins. After the race he attempted to assault her; Pelops threw him from Cape Geraestus, and the dying son of Hermes cursed the house of Pelops.2⚖

Hyginus instead says Pelops recruited Myrtilus by promising half the kingdom. Pelops killed him because keeping the bargain would be disgraceful, and the sea into which he fell took the name Myrtoan.3⚖
