In Greek mythology, Merope (also Haero in Parthenius) is a princess of Chios, daughter of King Oenopion and the nymph Helike. The hunter Orion seeks her; Oenopion blinds him after a drunken assault or refused marriage and casts him on the shore — the start of Orion's journey toward the sunrise. Distinct from Merope the Pleiad, Merope wife of Sisyphus, and other namesakes.

I.Daughter of Oenopion
Oenopion, son of Ariadne and bringer of wine to Chios, fathers Merope on Helike. She has brothers Melas, Talus, Euanthes, Salagus, and Athamas in the island stemma.
Orion comes to Chios after Side's death (or while wandering the Aegean). He desires Merope but lacks Oenopion's consent; versions differ on whether he marries her, assaults her while drunk, or is simply denied.
II.Orion blinded
In revenge Oenopion puts out Orion's eyes as he sleeps and throws him from the island. Blind Orion then seeks the east where Helios' rays will restore his sight — a Chian episode in the hunter's catasterism cycle.
The atlas id merope-chios is Oenopion's daughter alone. Do not merge with the Pleiad Merope, Sisyphus' wife, or other Meropes.
