In the Catalogue of Ships Homer counts Cos with Nisyrus, Crapathus, Casus and the Calydnian isles under the sons of Thessalus, but names the place the city of Eurypylus — the eponymous lord of the Dorian isle.2

Apollodorus tells a violent end: when Heracles was sailing from Troy, Hera sent storms against him; driven to Cos, he forced his way into the city by night and slew Eurypylus, son of Poseidon by Astypalaea, when the Coans had stoned his ships thinking him a pirate.3
