A prince of Tegea, son of Lycurgus and brother of Ancaeus. He fell ill and died, while his brother sailed with Jason; both were later sculpted on the gable of the temple of Athena Alea.1
Epochus belonged to the Aleid house of Arcadia. When Aleus died, the kingdom of Tegea passed to his eldest son Lycurgus, whose two sons were Ancaeus and Epochus. Of the brothers it was the lot of Epochus to fall ill and die, while Ancaeus joined the expedition of Jason to Colchis and afterwards hunted the Calydonian boar with Meleager.2
Apollodorus reckons the sons of Lycurgus more fully, naming Ancaeus, Epochus, Amphidamas, and Iasus, born of Cleophyle or, by another account, of Eurynome.3
Though Epochus took no part in the great hunt, the brothers were reunited in stone. On the front gable of the temple of Athena Alea at Tegea, where the chase of the Calydonian boar was carved, Pausanias saw Epochus supporting his brother Ancaeus, who is now wounded and has dropped his axe — set among Castor, Amphiaraus, Hippothous, and Peirithous.4
