Daphne is a Naiad nymph in Greek mythology, daughter of the river Peneus, who fled Apollo and was transformed into the laurel tree. She must be distinguished from the Arcadian huntress Daphne of the Ladon in Pausanias.

In Ovid's Metamorphoses Apollo pursues Daphne after Cupid's revenge; she prays and becomes the laurel (1.577–748).
Hyginus makes Earth receive her and change her into a laurel when she begs for protection (Fabulae 203).
