Cyrene is a nymph in Greek mythology, daughter of the river Peneus according to Hyginus, whom Apollo abducted from Thessaly to Libya where she bore Aristaeus. Hyginus also makes her the mother of the Argonaut seer Idmon. She must be distinguished from Cyrene, consort of Ares and mother of Diomedes of Thrace.

Apollonius of Rhodes tells how Cyrene tended flocks on the marsh-meadow of Peneus until Apollo carried her to Libya, where she bore Aristaeus (Argonautica 2.500–527).
Hyginus lists Aristaeus among the Sons of Apollo as born to Cyrene, daughter of Peneus (Fabulae 161), and names Idmon son of Apollo and the nymph Cyrene in his Argonaut catalogue (Fabulae 14).
Apollodorus uses the name Cyrene for a different figure: consort of Ares and mother of Diomedes the Thracian (Bibliotheca 2.5.8).
