When the sons of noble Alcinous first made trial in the foot-race before Odysseus and the court, Laodamas and Halius and godlike Clytoneus rose together. A course was marked from the turning-point, and all sped swiftly raising dust — but Clytoneus was far the best at running, leaving the others behind by a margin Homer compares to mules ploughing fallow land.2
