The Education of Achilles (Chiron teaching Achilles the lyre)

This Roman wall painting, recovered from the Basilica of Herculaneum and now in the Naples National Archaeological Museum, shows the wise centaur Chiron guiding the young Achilles' hand across the strings of a lyre. The image distills Chiron's central role in myth as the great tutor of heroes, who fostered Achilles on Mount Pelion and schooled him not only in hunting and medicine but in music and the civilizing arts. The composition became one of antiquity's most copied images of the master-and-pupil pair.
Achilles and the Centaur Chiron

In this Italian Rococo painting, Pompeo Batoni depicts Chiron instructing the boy Achilles in archery, the centaur's powerful equine body coiled behind his youthful pupil as he steadies the bow. Batoni, the leading history painter of mid-18th-century Rome, treats Chiron not as a wild creature but as a noble preceptor, embodying the Enlightenment ideal of the hero shaped by a wise teacher on the slopes of Pelion.
The Education of Achilles by the Centaur Chiron

Painted for the French academy and now in the Louvre, Regnault's Neoclassical canvas shows the centaur Chiron training the young Achilles in the open air, the muscular tutor demonstrating the use of a weapon while his pupil watches intently. The picture, with its cool clarity and heroic nudity, presents Chiron as the model educator of antiquity, transmitting strength, virtue, and skill to the future hero of the Trojan War.
Jason and His Teacher
Maxfield Parrish, 1909
This luminous illustration by the American artist Maxfield Parrish, created for Nathaniel Hawthorne's retellings of Greek myth, shows the centaur Chiron with another of his celebrated pupils, the young Jason, before he set out to win the Golden Fleece. Parrish renders Chiron against his signature saturated blue sky as a gentle, sagacious mentor, a reminder that the centaur tutored not only Achilles but a whole generation of heroes, including Jason and the healer Asclepius.
