Cyane daughter of the Maeander bore Miletus the twins Byblis and Caunus, children of surpassing beauty. When a servant read Byblis' confession aloud by mistake, Caunus fled in horror, renouncing kinship and homeland; he would not read her further letters.2
Through Caria and Lycia the youth outran his sister's frenzy — past Cragus, Lymira, the Xanthus, Bubassus, and the ridge of Chimaera — until he vanished into lands she could not enter, leaving Byblis to become the weeping spring of Miletus.3
